Barranquilla, officially the Special, Industrial and Port District of Barranquilla, is
the capital of the department of the Atlantic. It is located on the western margin of
the riverMagdalena 7.5 km from its mouth in the Caribbean Sea. It is
the main economic center ofthe Caribbean Region of Colombia, among economic
activities include trade andindustry. The population of Barranquilla is 1 223
967 people, which makes it the fourth Most populated city in the
country behind Bogota, Medellin and Cali. The city is the core of
the Area Metropolitan of Barranquilla, which is also constituted by
the municipalities of Soledad,Malambo, Galapa and Puerto Colombia.

It is located in the Abajo neighborhood, it was built in 1929 with a colonia
style that in the 90s the Caridi Mitrani family was responsible for remodeling,
to give it in 2000 to the Carnival Foundation of Barranquilla as the headquarters
of the organization of the party and meeting point of its participants.
The Barranquilla Zoo is the only one on the Colombian Caribbean Coast
and hosts more than 450 animals from five continents in beautiful habitats.
